  11. 1) Suppose MFMODE (and therefore mfmode) has a compile-time default of "cx"
  12.    and "D 300", config.ps has "M cx" and "D 300", and config.grape has
  13.    "M ljfour" and "D 600". Then

  15.    dvips -Pgrape <file> -o
  16.  
  17.    will properly set "D 600", but will ignore "M ljfour"! So it ends up
  18.    looking for 600-dpi fonts in pk/cx/ or whatever. I'm trying to track
  19.    down the reason right now; I'll let you know if I find it.

  21. 2) I think that you ought to process all PS specials through the PostScript
  22.    process---and just discard any bitmaps that come out when you don't
  23.    expect them (none will, most likely). PSfrag, a popular macro package, 
  24.    does a "special" within its style file that defines a PS dictionary... 
  25.    and then the subsequent .eps files that you load rely on those definitions 
  26.    and some surrounding specials.  xdvi chokes on 'em! I can try to 
  27.    whip up a patch, perhaps, but my time's as limited as yours...
